Estimate when a fixed payment clears a balance
A fixed monthly payment can clear a personal loan or other balance faster or slower depending on the interest rate and starting amount. This calculator applies monthly interest, then the chosen payment, until the balance reaches zero and uses the smaller exact payment in the final month.
The result is most useful when the payment is genuinely sustainable. It does not replace a lender statement or hardship support. If repayments are difficult, contact the credit provider promptly; changing a payment without agreement can have consequences. Keep a buffer for irregular household costs rather than treating the displayed amount as a commitment recommendation.
How to read the results
Estimated repayment time is the whole number of months in the schedule. Total interest is all monthly interest charged in that model; Total paid combines principal and that interest. Final payment is the amount due in the last month, which may be less than the chosen regular payment.
Payment too low appears when the selected payment does not exceed the first month’s interest. In that case the balance cannot reduce under this fixed-payment model. Fees and future rate changes are excluded from both outcomes.
Worked example
With the defaults of a $20,000 balance, 8.50% annual rate and a fixed $600 monthly payment, the estimate is 39 months. The calculator shows total interest of $2,895 and total paid of $22,895.
The final payment is $95.07 rather than $600. The example assumes no new borrowing, no account fees and the same rate each month.
A changed rate or missed payment would alter both the final payment and estimated clearing date.
Assumptions and limitations
- Interest is applied monthly before each payment.
- The selected monthly payment is made in full every month.
- No additional purchases, advances or balance transfers are added.
- The annual interest rate does not change.
- Account fees, late fees, insurance and lender collection costs are excluded.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the calculator say payment too low?
The payment is not enough to cover monthly interest, so the balance would not fall under the stated assumptions.
Can I use a fortnightly payment?
Convert it carefully to a monthly amount only if that reflects your payment pattern; this calculator models monthly payments.
Does the result include fees?
No. Entering a payment that covers only interest and fees would require a different model.
