A resident-rate view of tax and monthly take-home pay
This estimator applies the selected Australian resident individual income-tax rates to one annual taxable-income figure. It is intended to make the relationship between taxable income, income tax, Medicare levy and a monthly take-home estimate easier to inspect before you rely on payroll or a tax return.
Taxable income is not necessarily your salary package or gross receipts. Deductions, offsets, family circumstances and other obligations can change a final assessment. A change in taxable income can also move income into a different marginal bracket, without meaning every dollar is taxed at that rate. Select the relevant tax year and use the result as an indicative calculation rather than a statement of what you will pay.
How to read the results
Estimated take-home pay is the annual income less the calculated income tax and Medicare levy, divided by 12. The main result is therefore a monthly average, not a forecast of a particular pay cycle.
Income tax and Medicare levy are shown separately so their contribution is visible. Annual take-home is the corresponding yearly net amount. The calculation note identifies the resident rates and threshold treatment used for the selected year.
Worked example
Using the default taxable income of $120,000 and tax year 2026–27, the estimate shows monthly take-home pay of $7,590. The annual take-home amount is $91,080.
The displayed components are $26,520 of income tax and a $2,400 Medicare levy. Those figures assume the calculator’s single-person threshold treatment and do not incorporate withholding already paid.
Assumptions and limitations
- The person is treated as an Australian resident for tax purposes.
- The entered amount is annual taxable income rather than gross income before deductions.
- The estimate uses the selected year’s individual resident tax brackets.
- For 2026–27, it uses the latest published 2025–26 single Medicare levy thresholds.
- HELP debts, Medicare levy surcharge, family thresholds, offsets, deductions and exemptions are excluded.
Frequently asked questions
Why can my payslip withholding differ?
Payroll withholding uses pay-period tables and your declarations, while this tool models an annual amount with limited assumptions.
Can I enter my salary before deductions?
You can, but the result then estimates tax on that entered amount; it does not calculate work-related or other deductions.
Does this estimate a refund?
No. A refund also depends on PAYG credits and other return details, which are not inputs on this calculator.
